Whenever damage is inflicted to a ship or module with defenses, the tech absorbs a portion of damage equal to its Defense, with the remainder going to the ship or module's Health.
Do note that repair time is strictly based on Health (more specifically, equal to nominal repair time multiplied by the percentage damage taken); the status of the defense tech is irrelevant.
